Why Bermuda Is a Great Place for Kitesurfing — and Why February Matters

By Freestyle Legends Editorial

Discover Bermuda’s February wind potential, Daniel’s Head kiteboarding spots, turquoise Atlantic waters and Cambridge Beaches — the spectacular host resort for Freestyle Legends Bermuda 2027.

Bermuda has all the ingredients for an unforgettable kiteboarding destination: powerful Atlantic winter winds, brilliant turquoise water, spectacular coastal scenery and an island experience that is every bit as exciting off the water as it is on it. This is the setting for Freestyle Legends Bermuda 2027 — a celebration of world-class athletes, freestyle progression, Big Air and the spirit of adventure.

## February: Bermuda’s exciting Atlantic wind season

February is one of Bermuda’s standout months for winter wind sports. North Atlantic weather systems bring energizing wind conditions to the island, creating the potential for memorable freestyle sessions, Big Air action and dynamic competition windows. The movement of these weather systems gives Bermuda its distinctive character and makes every day on the water part of the adventure.

The island’s setting also gives athletes and photographers a magnificent canvas: deep-blue Atlantic horizons, clear coastal water and an unmistakably Bermudian backdrop.

## The wind records tell a compelling story

An FLT analysis of NOAA-derived Bermuda airport observations from February 2000 through February 2025 identified 732 dates with daily maximum sustained-wind measurements. On 351 of those dates — 48.0% — winds reached 20 knots or more. Wind reached 25 knots or more on 221 dates (30.2%), and 30 knots or more on 68 dates (9.3%). These numbers highlight the recurring strong-wind opportunities that make February an exciting month for kiteboarding.

Historic Bermuda Meteorological Office research published in 1956 adds another chapter. Observations from the exposed Fort George location recorded about 75% of February days reaching approximately 22 knots in ten-minute sustained-wind measurements. The airport and Fort George records come from different locations, periods and observation methods, giving complementary perspectives on Bermuda’s winter wind potential.

## Daniel’s Head: local kiteboarding on Bermuda’s west end

Close to Cambridge Beaches, Daniel’s Head is an established part of Bermuda’s local kiteboarding scene. Its coastal geography presents multiple riding possibilities, and the local kiteboarding community identifies wind-direction opportunities on both sides of the headland.

The north side of Daniel’s Head is associated with northwest-to-northeast winds, while the south side is associated with south-southwest-to-west winds. Nearby Somerset Long Bay is another recognized riding area, particularly for west-northwest-to-north-northeast winds.

Together these locations highlight one of Bermuda’s special qualities: a compact island offering a variety of coastal exposures, riding experiences and remarkable ocean views. Local kiteboarders and on-site weather monitoring provide valuable knowledge for choosing the best conditions and making the most of each session.

## Cambridge Beaches: a spectacular home for Freestyle Legends

Cambridge Beaches Resort brings the Freestyle Legends vision to an exceptional oceanfront setting. With its distinctive coastline, refined hospitality, elegant accommodations and authentic Bermuda atmosphere, the resort provides a remarkable home base for the Tour, its athletes, visiting fans, partners and media.

The combination of Daniel’s Head’s nearby kiteboarding heritage and Cambridge Beaches’ hospitality makes western Bermuda especially compelling. It brings together the energy of the sport and the pleasure of spending time in one of the Atlantic’s most beautiful island destinations.

## An unforgettable experience on and off the water

Freestyle Legends is about much more than what happens during a competition heat. Bermuda adds coastal exploration, island culture, memorable dining, resort experiences and opportunities to connect with athletes and fellow fans.

For visitors, the experience is a complete island escape: spectacular sport, beautiful surroundings and the distinctive welcome of Bermuda.

## Why February 2027 is such a natural fit

The inaugural Freestyle Legends Tour takes place February 2–7, 2027. February 2 brings arrivals and opening activities, followed by five ticketed event days from February 3–7.

That multi-day format creates flexibility to make the most of promising wind windows, with athlete experiences, media programming, hospitality and entertainment adding to the excitement throughout the week.

Bermuda offers something truly distinctive: documented winter wind potential, established local riding areas, unforgettable Atlantic scenery and a prestigious resort setting. It is an inspiring place to welcome the world of freestyle kiteboarding — and an ideal destination to begin the Freestyle Legends journey.

## About the wind research

The percentages above come from a preliminary FLT review of NOAA-derived Bermuda airport daily maximum sustained-wind observations for February 2000–2025. Each qualifying date reached the stated threshold at least once. Historical Fort George findings are from the Bermuda Meteorological Office’s 1956 study, The Surface Wind in Bermuda. The figures describe their respective observation sites; event operations will use current local weather information and professional safety assessments.
